24th August, 2010
The “Hearts of Tejina” is one of the most popular events in the world. This mixture of celebration and religious fervor is held in the village of the same name, Tejina, located northeast of Tenerife. On the day of the celebration, the streets of the city are full of flowers, fruits and bouquets as a gift to thank the patron saint of the city, San Bartolomé.
This feast originated from the middle of the nineteenth century and this tradition still remains intact. Therefore, when visitingTenerife in August, you will see a large parade of heart-shaped wooden frames, filled with delicious bread and grapes.
The celebration begins with the transfer of the hearts to the Iglesia de la Plaza Central, accompanied by a crowd of people and caravans, which represents the three most important areas of Tejina: Calle Arriba, Calle Abajo and El Pico who compete with each other making the best hearts.
At night begins what is known as “the exaltation of the heart,” where different groups from Tenerife go to the streets and interpret their songs. The official date of the festival is the 24th of August, but “The Association of Tijana Hearts” (responsible for preserving the tradition), will begin from 20th of this month with numerous artistic and cultural activities such as fairs, popular songs, exhibitions and festivals until early September.
This is the reason why “The International Centre for Heritage Conservation (CICOP), recognized in 2004 the contribution of this celebration to the maintenance of the universal heritage of small towns. The Canary Islands granted the Special Prize of the Restoration and Preservation of Intangible Heritage.
